A Grand Celebration of Nails at Nailympia Mexico 2024 – The Results
For the fourth Nailympia event of the year, 172 competitors participated in the third Nailympia Mexico hosted by Dafne Fernandez on 6-7 July 2024 in Mexico City.
Sponsors lined the arena, while spectators amassed to observe the two-day event.
Running nine arena competitions over two days means the contests ran back-to- back with little time in between for those who competed in all the events.
Fourteen countries were represented comprising Italy, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Nepal, Poland, UK, USA, Germany, Hungary, Colombia, Portugal and Mexico.
Eight booth judges flew into Mexico City with Alisha Rimando (USA) as acting head judge alongside Vincenzo Russello (Germany), Zrinka Vuksan (Canada/Croatia), Yeo Jung Shim (USA/Korea), Guin Deadman-Littlefield (USA), Fabiola Flores, Hemi Park (USA/Korea), Rocio Del Prado. These eight stayed out of sight and scrutinized nails behind the curtain while 15 floor judges, trained by Dafne, policed the floor.
A host of sponsors supported the event with a presence at the event where they showcased their nail products, collet ions and tools, as well as offering prizes to the winners and a special gift for judges too. Sponsors comprised, Stanzy nails & Beauty, Lovely Nails, Covett Nails, Ixzo Nails, Wapizima, Golden Nails, Ä Nails, Roubloff Mexico, Rome*Nails, Glamourosa Nails.
“This nail fayre and competition duo was in a league of its own, Dafne and husband, Oscar, presented a first-class nail experience that filled a large void for nail-focused events in this part of the world,” enthuses global director, Alex Fox. “I flew into the event a day later than expected to find an arena fully decorated and ready to rumble. And rumble it did! Music filled the air, booths were crammed with visitors keen to touch and feel products, while the buzz and thrill of competition that we’ve grown to love and has become somewhat of an addiction for some, radiated through the atmosphere. We were all entrenched in the wonderful motivating energy that Nailympia cultivates.”
Looking forward, there are two Nailympia events left in 2024. Nailympia San Antonio (15-16 September) and Nailympia London – its 20th anniversary event – on 13-14 October at Salon Beauty, Excel, London. Both are open for registration.

Nail Competition Advice for All Competitors
Nail Competition Preparation & Performance Tips
-
Research & Choose Your Competition
– Type of Competition: Decide whether you want to compete in-person, online or in a business-related competition.
– Study Standards: Review previous winners to understand the expected standards and styles.
– Rule Familiarity: Print and thoroughly review all competition rules and guidelines to ensure compliance.
-
Training & Preparation
– Invest in Training: Seek training from reputable educators with competition experience.
– Consistent Practice: Practice regularly on models or use alternatives such as simulated hands and regular nail tips when models are unavailable.
– Perfect Every Detail: Dedicate time to refining your techniques. Practice sidewalls, smile lines and filing to ensure every detail is precise and sharp.
– Organised Setup: Arrange your tools and products in the same way during both practice and competition to find everything easily under pressure.
– Create a Practice Schedule: Integrate competition practice into your salon routine. Allocate time to focus solely on competition skills and use these sessions to pack and refine your kit.
-
Product Familiarity
– Avoid Last-Minute Changes: Stick to one brand or product line at least a month before the competition.
– Environmental Adaptation: Practice with your chosen products in various conditions to understand their behaviour in different temperatures and humidity levels.
-
Mental & Physical Preparation
– Stay Calm: Use techniques or natural remedies to manage stress and keep composed during the competition.
– Mental Preparation: On the day of the competition, close your eyes to centre yourself. Visualise your focus on your table, model and the trophy. Hold onto this feeling as the competition starts, directing all your concentration towards winning.
– Checklist Use: Prepare a detailed checklist to ensure you have all necessary items and keep your area organised.
– Adequate Rest & Hydration: Get plenty of sleep before the competition day and stay hydrated to maintain focus and energy.
– Maintain calmness and confidence: You’ve prepared thoroughly so take pride in your participation and remember that every competition is a step towards perfecting your craft.
-
On the Day of the Competition
– Early Arrival: Arrive early to get accustomed to the venue and set up your area calmly.
– Tidy Workspace: Keep your area neat, with all products correctly labelled and within easy reach.
– Prepare for the Unexpected: Have your model prepared and comfortable and ensure both of you have eaten and visited the bathroom. Keep your workspace organised, as you won’t be able to retrieve items from your bag during the competition.
– Model Preparation: Ensure your model knows what to expect, including attire, timing and role during the competition.
– Get Nourished: Eat a good breakfast rich in carbohydrates to sustain your energy. Visit the bathroom beforehand and then focus on relaxation and enjoyment. This is your moment to shine.
– Using Music for Focus: Consider wearing headphones with a timed playlist. This method helps you manage your time and blocks out distracting noises, enhancing your concentration.
-
Post-Competition
– Seek Feedback: Engage with judges for valuable feedback to improve future performance.
– Utilise feedback: Critique and advice from judges and score sheets helps identify strengths and areas for improvement. This constructive criticism is invaluable for enhancing both your competition and salon work.
– Skill Enhancement: Use competition experiences to enhance your skills and deepen your understanding of industry standards.
Detailed Tips & Insights
Finding the Right Mentor & Model
Attend Classes and Find a Mentor. Even if you are a successful nail professional, competition nails are different from salon nails. Seek out competition classes or a mentor to guide you through the specific requirements and techniques.
Choose the Right Model
Select a model with suitable natural nails and a compatible personality. You’ll spend considerable time together, so it’s essential to have good rapport. Regularly treat their hands and nails to keep them in optimal condition.
Model’s Role During Competition
Your model should assist with time updates and act as an additional pair of eyes. Their support can significantly impact your performance.
Consistency & Practice
Consistency in your work is crucial. Even if the smile lines aren’t exceptionally deep, having all 10 smile lines uniform will score higher than inconsistent, deep smile lines. Achieving this consistency comes with regular practice. Applying your competition techniques in the salon will help build muscle memory and increase your speed.
Table Organisation
Place all tools and products in the same position during both practice and competition. This habit helps you find what you need quickly under pressure. Don’t compare your speed to others; focus on finishing at your pace. Decide early on which brand or products you’ll use and practice consistently with them to build familiarity.
Skill Building
Develop your skills methodically by focusing on one aspect at a time, such as the moon, sidewalls or smile lines. Each practice session should target a specific skill to gradually build your overall ability. Engaging with past winners for insights and advice can also significantly improve your techniques.
Handling Competition Stress
Plan for all possible scenarios to stay calm during the competition. Understand how different temperatures can affect your product’s setting times and adjust your application process accordingly. Prepare for temperature variations by dressing in layers and ensuring your model is comfortable.
Practical Application
Regular practice is key to building speed and confidence. Practicing under different conditions helps you adapt to the competition environment. Maintain a consistent timing routine and be prepared to start over if an application doesn’t go well.
Kit & Equipment Preparation
Your competition kit should be thorough and well-organised. Include all necessary products, tools, extension cords, adapters and multiple lamps. Good lighting is critical and having hand warmers and pillows can enhance comfort and performance.
Read & Understand the Rules
Rules can change, so review them thoroughly before each competition. If anything is unclear, contact the organiser for clarification to avoid penalties or disqualification.
Artwork Advice
Begin your artwork early, ideally 6-9 months before the competition, as creating detailed pieces can take hundreds of hours.
Use as much of your nail products as possible to showcase your skills. Add shadows and highlights to give depth to your design.
For the fantasy competitions remember the costume is a significant part of the score. Ensure it aligns with your chosen theme and complements your nails. Incorporate hair and make-up to enhance the overall presentation.
Do a complete practice run before the competition to manage your time effectively. Number the tips to know their placement and carefully package the nails for transport to prevent damage.
Focus on intricate details and consider a unique twist on your theme. Research previous winners to ensure your design stands out.
Specific Hints for Photo Competitions
Assemble a reliable team, including a hair stylist, make-up artist, model and photographer for trial runs.
Ensure the nails are the main subject in the photos and maintain the theme in all elements without overcomplicating the image.
Keep your concept clear and aligned with the competition’s theme.
General Competition Tips
Research thoroughly, organise your tools and timings and ensure your work is of the highest standard.
Keep up-to-date with the latest in nail competitions through social media and professional magazines.
Approach each competition as a learning experience. Enjoy the process and strive for personal progression.
Final Thoughts
Competitions offer various categories, catering to different strengths. Whether you excel in precision (like pink & white sculpting) or creativity (like Fantasy Nails), there’s a category for you. If you’re versatile, challenge yourself across multiple categories to strive for a ‘Champion of Champions’ title.
Learn from Experience. Each competition is a learning opportunity. Enter with an open mind, ready to absorb knowledge and experience. Winning isn’t the only goal; the journey and the skills you gain are equally valuable.
Competitions push you out of your comfort zone, challenging you to excel. They offer a unique way to gain recognition and experience a different facet of the nail industry.
Engage with the competition community, learn from each event and strive for constant improvement. Whether you win or not, every competition adds to your expertise and understanding of what it takes to create winning nails.
Achieving Consistency in NAILYMPIA Tip & Overlay & Sculpture Competitions
Consistency is key in the French T/O & Sculpture competitions and can significantly impact your score. Ensuring that each nail is identical in length, size, depth of smile line, sidewalls, and free edge thickness demonstrates precision and mastery.
To achieve this, start by meticulously measuring and shaping each nail to match. Use precise tools and techniques to maintain uniformity in length and size, making sure all nails align perfectly when viewed from different angles.
Pay special attention to the depth and curve of the smile lines, ensuring they are consistent across all nails; this requires a steady hand and careful control during application.
The sidewalls should be straight and even, creating a seamless contour that complements the nail’s overall shape. The free edge’s thickness must be uniform, not too thick (be mindful that it wants to be as thin as possible across the 5 nails to showcase your skill), providing a balanced and professional look.
Achieving this level of detail and symmetry reflects your technical skill and can make a significant difference in your competition scores, showcasing your ability to deliver flawless, high-quality nails under pressure that look stunning and aligned.

Hola Nailympia Mexico 2022 the results as published in Scratch magazine
Nailympia Mexico was sponsored by Covett Nails, Stanzy Nails & Beauty, Lovely Nails, Nail Krush, Glossarylive.com
The second edition of Nailympia Mexico was as spicy & flavourful as the country itself. Mexico City welcomed nail competitors to showcase their skills in 14 competitions across two days
Fourteen competitions over two days with 114 nail artists taking 355 seats is no mean feat, but it was the reality that dominated the Reforma district of Mexico City on 3-4 December 2022.
Five competitions were handed in for judging on the first morning, the rest were live on the competition arena, which meant it was a tough schedule. Touch indeed, yet competitors stepped up the plate with just 15-minute restroom breaks between competitions.
Eight countries were represented at the event, with entries from Chile, Argentina, Ireland, Poland, USA, Serbia, Mexico and Brazil.
Organiser, Dafne Fernandez, who’s love of nails and competition is apparent to all, took the Nailympia concept and set it alight for two days. The atmosphere was electric and, as if time stood still, everyone was living their nail dream in unison. It was true community working it’s magic and the idea of an international nail family was very real.
“Thank you Dafne and thank you Mexico!” enthuses global director, Alex Fox. “If ever I observed an industry shift, it was during Nailympia Mexico. There is a change in the air in that part of the world and it is being pioneered by Dafne Fernandez, her vision and her team. I watched the region’s thirst for nail unity, for competition, for innovation and education blossom and pollinate as we all immersed ourselves in nails. I cannot wait to experience this in 2023 and to feel that energy once more. It has made me so excited for the first two Nailympia competitions for 2023 in Düsselfdorf Germany and Premiere Anaheim, USA. Together, in its respecteive locations Naillympia is making a change; its driving up skills, confidence and unity!”
Dafne concludes, “Nailympia Mexico has changed the life of so many people, including me. As the host, I believe in challenges, effort, hard work and exceeding expectations, which Nailympia brings and more to everyone involved. During the two-day event emotions were running high, with passion and perseverance that you could feel in the air as you went onto the arena. It’s amazing and funny to think that people believe doing nails is easy until they see what is produced on the competition floor. It’s impressive to showcase how perfect and beautiful nails can be when crafted by the competitors. I hear so many people celebrating the fact that their nail tech is competing in the Olympics! And yes, Nailympia is the Olympics of nails! To see techs travelling around the world to participate is proof of the commitment not only to themselves, but to their students, their business, brand, clients and their skills. Putting their heart and soul into competing is inspirational to observe and one of the things I love the most about this competition. Nailympia creates a platform that affords an unrivalled experience. It’s powerful to be making a change, a difference in the nail market, and with Nailympia, that is my objective. Thanks goes out to sponsors, the judges and my team behind the scenes who all worked hard to build this second event. Thank you also to Alex Fox for this opportunity and to my family too.
“It was two days of emotion, high energy, passion and perseverance and I’m very, very happy to have the honour to host this nail brand.”

“Being part of Nailympia Mexico for the first time is an experience I will remember dearly forever. Not only did I meet with people and colleagues I respect in this industry, but I had the pleasure once again of being a technical judge for this competition, which I admire and respect.
“Alex Fox and Dafne Fernandez united the entire nail industry globally and allowed us to work side by side together and experience what Latin America has to offer. Respect, first and foremost; secondly, amazing talent, laughter, happy tears and the opportunity for many to be recognised, Alex Fox and Dafne Fernandez, thank you both for Nailympia Mexico 2022.”
Damon Ho, USA
“It was absolutely brilliant to see everyone’s passion and the love for nail art. To me, nail design is art and the nail nail artist, is an artist. It is also a gateway to success if you do it with all your heart. Nailympia is definitely the best nail competition to show your talent to the world.”

Nailympia judge, Hazel Dixon, launches HD Nail TV on a device near you…
UK-based champion nail artist, product developer, international educator and judge, Hazel Dixon, has now launched HD Nail TV, a new way of accessing nail information and inspiration. Scratch investigates this new direction for the HD Professional nail brand.
“The industry is so fast-paced and with the issues we face right now, I knew I had to do something to get the correct, fact-based information out there, as well as helping as many techs as possible with updating their skills and learning new techniques,” reveals Hazel Dixon. “As much as I love social media and the internet, there’s is also a lot of false and untrue information being posted, so I decided to do my bit to help the industry move forward.”
Recognising how the pandemic has changed everyone’s lives and noting the challenging current economic situation being faced by so many, Hazel wanted to alleviate the worry of travel to classes and the costs involved. “The time felt right to launch this concept, after years of me thinking about it,” she affirms.
“I’m a big believer that beginners always learn best in a hands-on environment with their educator by their side watching and guiding them, however working, qualified techs can really benefit from the HD Nail TV series. It allows them to watch and learn around their busy schedules, they can dip in and out when they choose, keeping them on a constant learning curve and up with the latest trends.”
Keen to remind nail professionals of the importance of CPD hours, Hazel highlights that it’s something she believes all working techs should be embracing. “There’s always something new to learn and I’m super excited to be able to help techs, that may not have been able to access my courses, the chance to learn from me from the comfort of their own environment.”

Invite this Wolf right up to your salon door
The first Nailympia global champion back in 2017, Sweden’s Madelene Wolf, has jumped into the slipstream of her success and launched a new nail system with education, known as Wolf.
“For a long time, I dreamt of having all the best materials gathered in one place instead of having to look for products I like from different suppliers,” reveals Madelene. “I also wanted to help others work with the best products in as simple a way as possible.”
Working alongside chemists since 2019, the Wolf nail system began its development journey with a vision of producing high quality products with fine pigments. Durability on the nail was another important factor for Madelene throughout the manufacturing process. “When I started my brand, it was not only to offer high-quality products that create beautiful and personalised nails, but also to help other nail therapists become the best in the world at their craft,” enthuses Madelene. “This is why I offer professional nail products and diploma courses in nail design at my Wolf Nail Academy, resulting in world class nails. People don’t really buy the products, they buy the purpose of them and the results they get.”
With an already saturated market, Madelene affirms she was guided by needing, “The best products for sale, salons and students. When I couldn’t find the level of quality on the market I required, I decided to produce my own.”
Training in nails back in 1996, this world class nail stylist from Gothenburg, has been working with nails ever since. “After being hired at various salons, I’ve had my own salon and school since 2008,” cites Madelene. “I train future nail therapists at the Madelene Wolf Nail Academy, however, no matter how much I think I know, I will never be fully trained and, as I love learning new techniques and shapes, I also make sure I regularly take courses myself.”
Reflecting on her journey into nails, Madelene fondly recalls, “I’ve been interested in nails since childhood when I would glue pieces of tape together, then cut them out to put on my nails. I then borrowed my mum’s red nail polish and thought the finished product looked great.”
Getting hooked on the idea of nails as a career was born from Madelene’s regular nail appointment leading her into a beginners’ nail course. “I thought nails looked like so much fun, so I went on a course and found it a great way to channel my creativity. I then decided to get further education.”
Climbing to the top of an industry ladder means taking education seriously, and as such, Madelene made it her mission to train with the best. Citing Najet Hamila Strand, Tom Holcomb and David Fowler, among a long list of industry greats, Madelene highlights, “If I have to pinpoint one industry professional I currently admire, it would be Olena Oezman, for her great passion for perfection. I can’t stop looking at her nails! But I also admire those who dare to follow their dreams and never give up, those who enter competitions and continue to take courses to keep improving.”
Proving that competing in nails can have a profound and positive effect on a nail career, Madelene notes her competition career (2001-2017), has afforded industry recognition, world travel, networking and further training and now the advent of her own nail brand.
“My biggest career highlight was when I became Nailympia Winner of Winners (Div 3) in London 2014, and then Nailympia Global Champion 2017. That is hard to forget! My heart was pounding so hard, and for a second I thought I would pass out before the results were announced. Another highlight is all the nail courses I’ve had the opportunity to arrange around the world, and now I’ve finally followed my dream of starting a nail brand.”
Living by the doctrine of never giving up on her dreams and living in a state of self-belief, Madelene’s eye for perfection and precision, alongside her persistence and determination, have led to the birth of an elegant and stylish product line, which delivers, in her own words, “Durability on the nails, ease of use and smooth application, high colour pigmentation, with brushes carefully developed by my colleague, Sandra Bergstrand, who’s been extremely picky regarding their quality throughout the production process.”
The Wolf nail system currently presents UV/LED hard gel, UV/LED gel polish, L&P acrylic, nail art products, brushes and accessories. Team Wolf is now delving deep into the R&D for an acrygel product to join the Wolf nail pack.
“I want to reach the whole world with my products, work with those who are passionate about the same things as me and train even more nail therapists worldwide,” smiles Madelene. And offering her expert advice to aspiring nail professionals, she notes in closing, “You have to believe in yourself and never give up. Follow your dreams and goals!”
